Can You Attend a Job Interview on a UK Visit Visa?
Yes — in certain circumstances, you can attend a job interview in the UK while visiting as a Standard Visitor.
This is something many people are not aware of. A UK Standard Visitor is allowed to take part in certain business activities, and these include attending interviews.
However, there is an important distinction between attending a job interview and actually working in the UK. A Visitor visa does not give you permission to take up employment.

What Changes From 8 October 2026?

The important point is this: attending an interview is not the same as having permission to work.
Can a Visitor Attend a Job Interview?
Yes.
The official GOV.UK guidance specifically includes attending interviews among the business activities that a Standard Visitor may undertake, subject to the applicable requirements.
For example, someone could travel to the UK as a genuine visitor and, during their stay, attend an interview with a UK employer.
However, the person must still satisfy the requirements of the Standard Visitor route. A genuine visitor must intend to leave the UK at the end of the visit and comply with the conditions attached to their visa.
What If You Get the Job?
This is where things become very important.
Getting a job offer does not give you permission to start working in the UK on a Visitor visa.
A Standard Visitor cannot normally undertake paid or unpaid employment for a UK company.
If an employer offers you a job after your interview, you must obtain the appropriate immigration permission before beginning employment.
For example, if the position qualifies under the Skilled Worker route, the employer may need to be an approved sponsor and the job must satisfy the relevant eligibility requirements.
Can You Switch From a Visitor Visa to a Skilled Worker Visa in the UK?
No.
A person who is in the UK as a Visitor cannot switch into the Skilled Worker route from inside the UK.
The process would generally be:
Visit the UK → Attend permitted job interview → Receive job offer → Leave the UK → Apply for the appropriate work visa from outside the UK → Return to the UK after obtaining permission to work
This is an important point for anyone considering attending an interview while visiting the UK.
What About an Erasmus Visa?
It is also important not to confuse a UK Visitor visa, Skilled Worker visa and Erasmus visa.
An Erasmus visa is associated with education, study or mobility activities rather than being a general employment visa. Depending on the particular Erasmus programme and the country involved, different immigration arrangements may apply.
Therefore, if your purpose is to study, participate in an Erasmus programme or undertake an approved academic mobility activity, you should check the specific immigration requirements for that programme.
An Erasmus visa or study-related immigration permission should not be treated as a substitute for a Skilled Worker visa if your intention is to take up ordinary employment in the UK.
Similarly, having an Erasmus or other study-related visa does not automatically give someone unrestricted permission to work.
Can You Travel to the UK Specifically for a Job Interview?
A job interview is listed as a permitted business activity for Standard Visitors. However, you must still genuinely qualify as a Visitor and comply with all the Visitor requirements.
The Visitor route is intended for temporary visits. You must be able to demonstrate that you will leave the UK at the end of your visit and that you can support yourself without working in the UK.
Therefore, you should not use a Visitor visa as a way of entering the UK with the intention of simply taking up employment.
An interview may be permitted. Working is a different matter.
Interview vs Working vs Study

Job interview on a Standard Visitor visa:

Working for a UK employer:

Instead, establish whether the employer can sponsor you under an appropriate work route, such as the Skilled Worker route, and whether the job and your circumstances satisfy the relevant requirements.
You would then normally need to leave the UK and apply for the appropriate work permission from outside the UK before returning to start employment.
If your intended purpose is education or an Erasmus programme, you should instead check the immigration requirements applicable to your specific Erasmus or study arrangement.
A Simple Example
Imagine that Ahmed travels to the UK as a Standard Visitor.
During his visit, he has an interview with a UK company.
He attends the interview and is offered a job.
Ahmed cannot simply start working the following Monday because he is still a Visitor.
If the job qualifies for the Skilled Worker route and the employer is able to sponsor him, Ahmed would need to follow the appropriate work-visa process, including leaving the UK and applying from outside the UK where required.
On the other hand, if Ahmed is travelling for an approved Erasmus or academic mobility programme, his immigration position would depend on the specific programme and applicable immigration rules.
The key is to choose the immigration route that matches the actual purpose of the stay.
